About this critical risk
Suspended loads are a critical risk across many BMD sites. It includes any material, equipment or structure that is lifted and temporarily supported by cranes, hoists or other mechanical lifting devices.
OUR GET-SET PRACTICE:
Take a breath, spot the risks, make a plan
Lock in your controls
Get it done, safely
Our categories of controls
Lift Planning
- Use the Lift Planning Matrix to develop and plan for all lifts, including those involving cranes and earthmoving equipment.
- A Risk Assessment must be completed and communicated to the workers involved in the lift.
- The Mobile Crane Inspection Checklist must be completed prior to commencement of the lift.
Load Control and Stability
- Loads must be correctly slung using suitable lifting gear that has been inspected, colour coded (RGBY) and recorded in the lifting equipment register prior to use.
- Load movement must be controlled using compliant tag lines or approved control systems.
Lift Supervision and Competency
- Trained, competent and authorised personnel must control the lift, with a Dogger/Rigger and Spotter used where required.
- Clear communication and line of sight are to be maintained at all times.
Clearances around Suspended Loads
- Restricted and Exclusion Zones must be established and maintained to prevent access beneath suspended loads, in accordance with the Mobile Plant & Equipment Minimum Standards.
- Lifting operations must stop immediately if an alarm is activated, a limit is reached, or weather conditions hinder the lift.
THE BMD FUNDAMENTALS THAT RELATE TO THIS RISK:
We always keep clear of suspended or moving loads.
We always have an effective plan to manage traffic, people and plant
