About this critical risk
Mobile Plant & Equipment is our most prevalent critical risk, present on every site. It refers to any mobile machinery, tool or application that is mechanically driven.
OUR GET-SET PRACTICE:
Take a breath, spot the risks, make a plan
Lock in your controls
Get it done, safely
Our categories of controls
Plant Readiness and Operator Competency
- Only authorised operators may operate mobile plant.
- Only plant with Pre-Site Acceptance approval and a Plant Induction Sticker may operate on site.
- Operators must complete daily pre-start inspections before commencing use.
- Where a seatbelt is fitted, it must be worn.
- Remove defective plant from service immediately and tag out.
Site Planning and Physical Separation
- Plant and personnel movement must always be managed by an up-to-date Vehicle Movement Plan.
- Workers on foot must use designated walkways at all times.
Work Zones
- Every site must clearly define and signpost work zones.
- Use three types of zones to manage plant and pedestrian movement:
- Plant-Free Zones – for light vehicles, pedestrians, and crib areas only.
- Restricted Zones – where mobile plant is operating and only those directly involved in the task may enter. Positive comms and approval must be made before anyone else enters.
- Exclusion Zones (No-Go Zones) – no entry for workers or plant unless authorised.
- Zones must be physically delineated and checked as site conditions change.
Positive Communication and Spotters
- Spotters must maintain clear communication and stay visible to the operator, remaining identifiable and out of harm’s way at all times.
- Always establish positive communication when approaching and working alongside mobile plant.
