About this critical risk
Traffic risk exists anywhere vehicles, plant and people share space. That includes our sites, access roads and active work zones where movement is constant and conditions change quickly.
OUR GET-SET PRACTICE:
Take a breath, spot the risks, make a plan
Lock in your controls
Get it done, safely
Planning and set up
A Traffic Management Plan (TMP) must be developed for works impacting public or external traffic.
An approved Traffic Guidance Scheme (TGS) must:
- Be implemented when works impact the public or external traffic
- Be developed by suitably trained personnel
- Clearly define how traffic will be controlled,
staged and protected.
Traffic Guidance and Separation
- Lane closures and traffic control devices must be installed, inspected and maintained to conform to the TGS.
- Traffic Controllers are only to be used where traffic control devices alone are not reasonably practicable.
- Shadow vehicles must be used to protect Traffic Controllers during set-up where required.
- Workers on foot (including Traffic Controllers) must maintain a safe distance from live traffic and have identified escape routes to safe areas.
Monitoring and Control Effectiveness
- Drive-through inspections (with a dash-cam) must be completed at the start and end of the shift, when conditions change and after an incident.
- Traffic control devices must be adjusted if conditions change (e.g. traffic volume, speed, weather, staging).
- Only relevant traffic control devices are to remain active at the end of each shift.
THE BMD FUNDAMENTALS THAT RELATE TO THIS RISK:
We always keep away from moving plant
We always have an effective plan to manage traffic, people and plant.
